There’s nothing worse than getting halfway through your home renovation and realizing that you’re going to come in way over budget. The good news is that with some strategic and creative thinking, you can cut your renovation costs without cutting corners. Join Parabola Developments as we highlight five tips to help you save money on your next reno.

1. Know When to Call for Help

While DIY-ing some or all of your home renovation is a great way to save on labour costs, it’s important to know your limitations. If you think a plumber is expensive, think about how much more expensive they will be if they are coming in to do an emergency fix after a failed DIY attempt. A good rule of thumb is to seek the help of a professional when it comes to things like plumbing, electrical or structural work.

2. Don’t Move the Plumbing

Moving the plumbing in your home is a big job, which comes along with a big price tag! To keep your renovation costs down, leave the toilets, sinks, and showers where they are and focus on changing other areas instead.

3. Shop the “As Is” Section

Otherwise known as the “last call” or “scratch & dent” section, shopping these areas can save you a ton of cash. In most cases, any flaws in the furniture are hidden completely. Other times, stores will sell their floor models, and the only downside is you have to figure out how to transport a kitchen table that’s already completely built. While shopping around does take more time, it will definitely pay off financially if you put in the effort.

4. Don’t Discount a Coat of Paint

Never underestimate the difference a new coat of paint can make in a room. Even if you change nothing else, a switch in the color of the room can make it feel brand new. Even high-quality paint is still relatively inexpensive, and it’s a job that can be easily done by yourself.

5. Stick With Stock Sizes

The more custom you make your project, the higher the cost will be. When planning your renovation, keep in mind the stock size of things like cabinets, doors, windows, etc. Being able to buy off the shelf will help stretch your renovation budget farther.
