Is Now a Good Time to Renovate? Things You Should Consider During the COVID-19 Pandemic

It’s been over a year since the country began implementing restrictions and precautions in order to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Many of these restrictions include closing non-essential businesses, limiting non-essential travel and practicing social distancing.

These precautions have been effective in flattening the curve, but it has placed many Canadians in a confusing situation. Many people are still unsure of how much of their normal lives they are still allowed to partake in.

One question people may have is whether or not now is a good time to go ahead with home renovations.

The approach of warmer weather means that many homeowners will be gearing up to carry out the renovations they planned over the wintertime.

If you are planning to renovate your home, you may be intending on carrying these renovations out yourself to pass the time or hiring a professional tradesperson to get the job done.

Whatever route you choose, you are probably wondering if it is safe to go ahead with home renovations.

Before you make that choice, here are things you should consider:

Your Finances

How will you pay for your renovations?

Renovations range in price depending on the work that needs to be done. You need to carefully consider how much the project will cost in comparison to how much you want to get it done.

There’s no telling right now how this pandemic is going to affect the economy. The possibility of a recession is always looming and income may not be as secure as it was before the outbreak.

The general recommendation is to avoid using your savings or incurring debt in order to have a renovation done.

Otherwise, if you can comfortably spend the money without compromising your credit or savings, there should be no harm in going ahead with moderate renovations.

Purchasing Supplies

The amazing thing about this outbreak is how well businesses have adapted to providing services while protecting the population. Many hardware and lumber yards will arrange over-the-phone purchasing of materials with no-contact pick-up.

This makes procuring the materials you need for your renovation low-risk.

However, you still need to consider that the COVID-19 virus is able to survive on surfaces for varying amounts of time. For instance, it can remain active on plastic for up to 72 hours and up to 24 hours on cardboard. This means that you should disinfect any materials you purchase or let them sit for the appropriate amount of time to ensure there is no remnants of the virus on them.

If you are hiring a contractor to complete your renovations, they are likely to follow through with safety protocols as well.

Hiring Professionals and COVID-19 Protocols

You may be uncertain as to whether or not you can safely have trades-people in and around your home to complete renovations while still following COVID-19 related protocols.
